"Faceless" Indus Valley City Puzzles Archaeologists- By John Roach
In 1921, archaeologists discovered the city of Mohenjo Daro and Harappa. The most surprising things about the two cities were the fertile soil and the amount of influence that the cities had over water. Although the cities were well developed, something surprised archaeologists. There was no sign or evidence of religious beliefs found. No huge monuments, temples for gods, no palaces for kings or queens. We find it very strange that there is no evidence of who lived in the city, who controlled it and why it was even there. We only have the remains but all the stories behind it are hidden and wrapped into a blanket of secrets which is why the two cities are considered “faceless”.  Since there are no temples or palaces we predict that they had no kings or queens but governments instead. The people of Mohenjo- Daro are known to have lived in quiet a luxury. They had tools, jewelry and tools. They also traded with many civilizations and went as far as to Mesopotamia to sell and purchase goods and resources they needed. Instead of living in mud houses like Egyptians and Mesopotamians they lived in nice brick houses with courtyards. When we uncovered the city and started a detailed search we discovered that the cities had underground canals, for water supply and to export waste and garbage out of the city. There was so much clean water that they used it for absolutely everything. Drinking, bathing and even farming! The people of Mohenjo- Daro rode horse carriages which helped them gain control and climb to the top. We still have not uncovered any evidence of language in written form.  What we have found so far is amazing but we need to dig deeper and uncover everything that they left behind.
